The 2017-18 international signing period has the chance to be a successful one for the Phillies at both ends of the spending spectrum. At the top end, there’s Luis Garcia and his $2.5-million bonus. At the bottom end, there’s lefty Jordi Martinez, now a Top 30 prospect, and Rojas, who jumped on the map by hitting .320 in the Dominican Summer League in 2018, then hit his way from the Gulf Coast League to the New York-Penn League during his United States debut in 2019. He was one of the top standouts during instructional league play in 2020.
Rojas has already impressed with his ability to make consistent hard contact from the right side of the plate, displaying plus bat-to-ball skills along with one of the highest exit velocities in the system. Because of his knack for contact, he’s been very aggressive at the plate. While he doesn’t strike out much, he doesn’t draw walks and is still working on his overall approach so he can get to better hitters' counts and utilize his raw power more effectively.
With a strong arm that works well for a corner, Rojas’ plus speed and instincts give him a very good chance to stick in center, showing the ability to play shallow and go deep with ease. He’ll keep getting time at all three outfield spots, with one of the highest ceilings in the system.
